Water, water everywhere

ROSEBANK – Thousands upon thousands of litres of fresh water has been wasted, simply washed down the drain.

This is what numerous Rosebank residents had to deal with on 7 December, even though it was recently announced that water restrictions were to be implemented and those who did not comply would be fined.

Concerned Killarney resident, Martin Louw, notified the Rosebank Killarney Gazette of a burst water main on the corner of Oxford and North roads which had been leaking since 3 December and had subsequently been reported twice.

“I don’t understand why it has taken Joburg Water three days to come see to the problem,” said Louw.

“Their company policy stipulates that any leak is supposed to be repaired within a turnaround time of 12 hours.”

Upon further investigation by this newspaper, another burst pipe was noticed on the corner of Chaplin and Atherstone roads in Illovo, spraying water 3m in the air.

After photographing the first two instances of burst water pipes, another concerned resident who asked not to be named, contacted Rosebank Killarney Gazette with a third complaint of a burst pipe on Ruth Road in Hyde Park. This burst also had a strong stream of water steadily flowing down the road towards Jan Smuts Avenue.

A fourth report of a burst pipe was brought to this newspaper’s attention which occurred on 25 November on Dorset Road in Parkview.

Ward councillor for the Parkview area, Tim Truluck said, “Overnight, when people are using less water, the pressure builds up even more and the pipes burst,” said Truluck.

“And once one pipe goes, the pipes near it often subsequently pop too.”

Johannesburg Water has been approached and an update with their response will follow once it’s been received by this paper.
