Hyde Park High gives back

HYDE PARK - As the Hyde Park High School matrics prepare for a new chapter in their lives, they made sure some pupils could have a more fortunate one in the new year as they donated their school shoes to the less privileged.

Spokesperson for the school, Avril Wright said, “Hyde Park High School pupils have a strong ethos of giving and caring for those less fortunate. Many of the matric pupils of 2015 donated their school shoes to charity. “Three huge boxes were filled and these shoes will be given to needy students in Alexandra through Rays of Hope, facilitated by the Rosebank Union Church.

The charitable act forms parts of the school’s Change for Change initiative which began this year and seeks to instill a regular habit of donating among the pupils.

“Each teacher has a collection box in their class and pupils can contribute at anytime that they have change to spare. The result of this project has seen a generous donation being made to the Avril Elizabeth Home, The Society for Animals in Distress and the Salvation Army Firlands Children’s Home,” said Wright.

The staff of the school also elected to forego exchanging gifts at the end of the year and supported the Alexandra Old Age Home. Forty-three gift boxes were put together and were distributed through the Rays of Hope initiative.

Also, the school’s Charity Casual days which took place throughout the year raised funds for Wits Hospice, South African Guide Dogs Association, African Children’s Feeding Scheme, as well as providing cat and dog food for the Randburg SPCA and food hampers for the school’s estate management team.

Principal of the school, Manolis Vogiatzis, added that he was proud to say that Hyde Park High School pupils, parents and staff really do care about others.
