First Thursdays of every month

JOBURG - The holidays are approaching, so why not kick off your weekends on Thursday?

First Thursdays Johannesburg is a free cultural experience where art galleries and other cultural attractions in Braamfontein and Rosebank stay open late on the first Thursday of every month.

This concept was introduced to allow the people who don’t often get the chance to experience the art in the city due to busy work schedules and families to maintain afterwards.

It is more than just a transplant of the successful Cape Town edition of First Thursdays, and the start of First Thursdays Johannesburg is bound to take on its own form – inspired by the complex and culturally rich city of gold.

The First Thursdays programme is curated and focused on art galleries and other cultural attractions, but also features some of the retail stores, restaurants, and bars that add to the experience.

The night is as much about experiencing art and culture as it is about exploring the city on foot.

In December art lovers can look forward to exhibitions at Rosebank galleries including Stevenson, Gallery MOMO, Goodman Gallery and David Krut Projects, among others, along with Braamfontein venues such as Dokter and Misses, Kitchener’s, The Orbit and many more.

What makes Braamfontein the perfect spot for this umbrella event that is made up of multiple small events, is that there are a number of galleries in the bustling precinct and so participants are then able to walk to each gallery, restaurant or store in the area and experience the full range of art and culture in the city.

Organisers suggest browsing the highlights on the site and choosing a few exhibitions and attractions that look most appealing to view, but encourage participants to be open to letting the night take its own course.
