Christmas party for the needy

NORWOOD - A weekly stew kitchen is held at St Luke's Church hall in Norwood and feeds about 100 people.

And on 26 November, a huge Christmas party was held for the disadvantaged and unemployed.

Locals from Yeoville, Norwood and surrounding areas received a plate of food and a small Christmas gift. The church hall was packed to capacity with volunteers catering to over 200 people. Not only were the needy offered a meal and a gift to take home, but they also enjoyed a morning of fun and dance as a band kept those in attendance entertained.

The stew kitchen has been in operation for seven years, and every Tuesday, peanut butter sandwiches are offered, while each Thursday, those in need can tuck into a beef stew, scrambled eggs and fruit.

Jenny Marcus, who is part of the stew kitchen said, “The idea started during the xenophobic attacks when poverty became a major issue. You now find people from 10 different countries sitting at a table together.”

The church allows the stew kitchen to make use of the hall, while Oaklands Fruit Shop donates fruits and vegetables. Marcus provides non-perishable foods and many residents volunteer in the kitchen every week.

Freeman Modisa, who comes to the kitchen every week, is 47 years old and has four children. Modisa said, “I have been coming to the kitchen for many years since it started. My stomach stays empty until the stew is served on a Thursday.”

John Hoffee, who has been a volunteer at the stew kitchen for the past seven months said, “Wonderful things are being done here every Thursday.”
