Work stoppages at Pikitup

JOBURG – An ‘unprotected strike’ has led Pikitup, the City of Johannesburg’s waste management entity to experience unplanned work stoppages at 10 of its depots.

The entity’s spokesperson Jacky Mashapu said the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) members did not follow the protocol before they embarked on a strike action as they have never declared a dispute with Pikitup.

“Normally the union declares dispute with the employer before embarking on a strike, this strike by Samwu is illegal. We are still trying to put our heads together as we don’t even know what their issues are,” Mashapu said.

He added that they have never received anything from the union and that Pikitup is still trying to get to the nature of the illegal strike. Mashapu said this will cause temporary interruptions to refuse collection service mainly for residents and business owners whose bins are serviced on a Monday.

“We advise that affected areas whose waste is not picked up later this afternoon after after 5pm, should take the bins back inside their yards and bring them out again tomorrow morning,”Mashapu said.

Pikitup also apologised for any inconveniences which may be caused as a result of the interruption.
