Wits protests may continue in 2017

JOBURG - Even though the student and staff protests have ended, it is important to review what has passed and to consider the future of Wits University.

Turmoil and turbulence struck Wits University, as well as other tertiary institutions in South Africa, as students protested against the proposed price increase of school fees in the #FeesMustFall campaign.

Once the students won that battle, the staff at Wits proceeded to protest the use of external contractors for their workers, according to terms that had been agreed upon by the University of Cape Town for their staff.

While students and workers continue to celebrate their wins, there have been reports that the protests will continue next year regarding the proposed fee increases for 2017.
