Brighter futures for Midrand scholars

JOBURG - An experienced teacher continues to work in the field she is most passionate about, and in conjunction with Brighter Futures Tuition, will help a number of pupils struggling with mathematics.

The programme provides extra maths tutoring, using interactive technology on mobile phones – now in Midrand. Brighter Futures enables children to learn at their own pace within a small group while getting the advantage of individualised attention from an experienced tutor like Mala Gaisi.

Brighter Futures Tuition provides high quality, cost-effective extra maths support for Grade 8 to 12 pupils. Its maths tutor sessions use curriculum-aligned technology and highly trained tutors so each pupil has an individualised learning experience in a small group setting.

It is for this reason that this experienced teacher, who also provided training at Telkom, joined the programme in an attempt to help pupils achieve higher grades in maths.

Educationists – Gail Campbell from Zenex and Dr Martin Prew from Wits University – agree that many pupils fail to build the foundation maths skills while in primary school. They then move on to high school with large chunks of missing maths knowledge and then fail, resulting in many of their teachers encouraging them to shift to maths literacy.

Poor maths has dire consequences for South Africa as a developing nation as this results in shortages of skills in mining, energy, engineering, construction and IT.

Gaisi believes that Brighter Future’s technology is key to filling these learning gaps. “Our technology is intelligent,” she said.

“Meaning that if a child gets a question wrong, the system kicks them back to where they are missing fundamentals, and then builds them up as they get questions right.”

This in turn helps to develop their confidence, which is key to maths learning.

“And of course it’s fun. Pupils are motivated as they get to play on their mobile phones. This makes my job easier,” she concluded.
