Art in his heart

JOBURG - Rising star in the art industry, Cassius Khumalo, is bringing his artworks from Alexandra to the heart of Joburg.

He is an artist who pays impeccable attention to detail and it is for this reason that he was spotted by the Ichikowitz Family Foundation and asked to be a part of the Art Crosses Borders – Conversations art exhibition at Constitution Hill.

While Khumalo has gained substantial attention from this exhibition, his journey with art began many years ago. “I would go to school and the teachers would tell me to write down notes from the chalkboard, but I’d just keep on drawing,” he said.

He said his passion for art stemmed from deep within, on a spiritual level, so when he’s not producing beautiful works of art, he’s finding inspiration for them.

“When I’m not doing art, to be honest, I observe a lot,” he said.

“I travel around. I try to observe. I try to connect with the world and I try to connect with Africa, most of all because my artworks are based on Africa.”

The artist refuses to have an office job and so he makes sure that all his work is of the best quality so he can continue to do what he loves. That is perhaps the reason his work has been displayed at Constitution Hill among some of the greatest artists’ work in South Africa to date.

Extremely confident in his skill, he said, “I knew my art was going to be [at Constitution Hill] because I don’t choose the art, the art chooses me – whether it comes to me in a dream or whether it comes to me in a moment.”

The recurring theme in all his art is the spirituality of the pieces and the way he tries to connect the living and the non-living.
