Wonderful work with wood

PARKTOWN – PARKHURST – Some people look at a piece of wood and think to themselves, “it’s just a piece of wood”. Then there are people who look at a piece of wood and see the potential to create a masterpiece.

It’s the latter type of people who make up the Witwatersrand Woodworking Association. Chairman for the association, Clive Stacey, explained that it is a non-profit organisation that exists to promote and maintain interest, skill and excellence in the working of wood.

“Currently we meet at the Living Link Centre in Parkhurst and lease our workshop premises in Albertskroon,” said Stacey. “This workshop, which houses all our equipment, is by far the best facility we have occupied for doing woodwork. It can easily accommodate 10 individuals who can simultaneously do woodwork on the benches and equipment. There is always someone around to help and advise newcomers.”

This workshop facility is of particular benefit to members who do not have space for a workshop and may be starting out and be unsure about what type of equipment they need, or who cannot or will not invest in such expensive equipment.

“We support all woodworking styles, genres, disciplines and techniques and have amateurs from all walks of life and professional woodworkers among our members – active and retired,” he continued.

“Anyone who is really keen to share and learn the craft is most welcome. We develop skills, therefore, we do not expect newcomers to have these skills when they begin.”

Stacey would like to invite arts and crafts enthusiasts to their gatherings which function as a forum for the interests of association members.

“Specific interest groups and workshops convene at various times during the month. A single, annual subscription, presently R375 per year, allows access to all facilities and groups, with no additional fees levied,” he said in conclusion.

“We welcome all with an interest in woodworking and thrive on new membership and fresh ideas.”
