ORT JET celebrates entrepreneurs

ORCHARDS – ORT JET celebrated the entrepreneurial spirit of a number of individuals in various categories, and recognised the effort they have made to empower businesses in the Jewish communities of South Africa.

ORT JET, an organisation committed to supporting and uplifting small businesses and start-ups, hosted the annual Eureka Awards and celebrated 10 years in the business on 27 October at the Hebrew Order of David Hall in Orchards.

Guests were welcomed to the awards ceremony by the chairman of ORT SA, Darryl Weisz. He announced that they had received two anonymous donations of R50 000 each in support of the organisation and the financial aid it gives to entrepreneurs. The donors also pledged to match the donations of guests at the event.

Chief Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein took to the podium and said, “ORT JET is built on entrepreneurial spirit and the idea of what we can do for the good, not what we can do for our own gain.”

The award ceremony saw Orit Taback of Orit’s Bakery, and Anthony Wald of Apricity sharing the first prize in the start-up category.

In the concept category Wayne Gluckmann’s Proximity took first prize, followed closely by Neville Fleishmann for Lifetubes.

The annual award for the ORT JET Business of the Year went to Shalya Hirschson of Uvemvane Project NPC.

The Sheldon Cohen ORT JET Mentor of the Year Award went to Mark Sack, managing director at Sally Williams Fine Foods.

The winners of the various categories received a number of prizes including a R100 000 interest-free loan, free advertising, Wi-Fi tablets, life coaching and financial training, among other things.
