ANC calls off Randburg shutdown

JOBURG – The African National Congress (ANC) Dennis Goldberg branch in Ward 102 who were supposed to march and campaign for a total shut down of business operations in the Randburg Central Businesses District on 30 October called off the march due to a misunderstanding with law enforcement agencies.

Branch secretary Letsiri Richard Ntjana said they were expecting about 1000 people to come to town to hand over a memorandum to the ministry of trade and industry. The march which was termed “The socio-economic transformation march,” in the CBD would have led to many road closures at Hill Street pedestrian bridge at the intersection of Jan Smuts, Braam Fischer and Jean avenues.

The road closures were also expected in other areas such as Jan Smuts, Braam Fischer avenues entrances, , Braam Fischer and Bond entrances, , Braam Fischer and Republic entrances, Kent and Hill intersection.

Ntjana said, “Police didn’t want us to march and we ended up clashing with the police. And we called off the march.”

However the secretary emphasised that their organisation will organise numerous marches in the future to demand socio-economic transformation. “This is not going to end here, “We need government to address the concerns of the community. We want close down the Randburg, nobody is supposed go to work, all businesses must close down. We call to our people to heed to the call to shut down the Randburg CBD with no one working,” he said.
