Special needs schools needs your help

PARKVIEW - Patron for Forest Town School for children with disabilities will host a golf day to help raise funds.

Former Springbok rugby player, Kobus Wiese who is patron of Forest Town School for pupils with special needs, will host the school’s annual golf day on 17 November at the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club in Linksfield North.

The money raised will go towards paying the salaries of essential professional and non-professional posts, and for general funds for the school.

“Of the 85 professional and non-professional posts, there are 26 essential posts that are not subsidised by the department of education. Our organisation is multi-disciplinary, not just a school, we are a fully-fledged medical and clinical centre,” said Marion Leatherbarrow, who organises fundraising for the school.

The school was established in 1948 and was the first school in the country for special needs children. As the school has grown, so have their budgetary needs as there are more departments in place and an increase in the number children.

“The annual government subsidy only provides 20 percent of the school’s budgetary needs. Therefore, donations are always accepted,” she said.

Th golf day will cost R6 000 for a four-ball, which will include two golf carts, arrival snacks, halfway house, dinner, limited drinks and prize-giving.

To sponsor holes it will cost R6 000.

Comedy entertainment will be provided by Joe Parker with Dave Usendorff as the master of ceremonies.

Registration will start at 10am and tee-off is at 11am.

Community members who want to donate to the school can contact Leatherbarrow and request a tour of the school and its facilities.
