Craighall Park murder and rape suspect bust after a year on the run

A suspect was apprehended by Parkview police outside an Alexandra tavern for the murder of an elderly Craighall Park resident.

Rosemary Anne Dowdle (80) was raped and strangled on 19 September last year in her home.

“On 25 October [this year], just before 4pm, Parkview detectives on a sting operation arrested a 27-year-old suspect in connection with the murder,” said Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for Parkview police.

“Police have been hot on the heels of the suspect for some time now, culminating in his arrest.”

He added that during preliminary investigations it was established that the deceased’s vehicle, a Nissan 1400, had been stolen on the day of the murder. It was later recovered a short distance from the scene after the suspect had abandoned it following an accident with another motorist.

“We would like to praise our members for diligent work. An arrest of anyone suspected of such a heinous crime is a big deal to us, as it renders our communities safer,” said Colonel Thembekile Kubone, Parkview Police Station commander.

The suspect will appear at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court to face charges of rape, murder and theft of a motor vehicle.
