Free Wi-Fi in Braam, for everyone, every day

JOBURG - You can now access 300 megabytes of free Wi-Fi each day you visit Braamfontein, courtesy of the City of Joburg.

The City launched their Braamfontein Wireless Mesh project as part of the Smart City initiative that will hopefully allow people to access free Wi-Fi by the end of the year.

Braamfontein is the first precinct in Johannesburg to be fully connected with the 100 percent free Wi-Fi – up to 300 megabytes per day, per device.

“We see this is as a very transformative initiative that will turbocharge Joburg’s digital economy,” said City of Johannesburg, Executive Mayor Parks Tau.

The transformation aims to allow individuals, students, businesses, SMMEs and visitors the chance to connect anywhere in the area and, furthermore, promote development through access to information.

“We have set ourselves an ambitious target to get this going, but it really is just the beginning. Amazing things are coming and Smart City is here – this is our vision for a world-class African city.”

An ambitious target, indeed, the project aims to provide the city with 1 000 Wi-Fi hotspots where each citizen can make use of broadband connectivity to perform their daily online tasks.

This is not a project specific to the city as Smart City is set to roll out in a number of areas including Diepsloot and Ivory Park.
