Bring light to people

JOBURG - In many countries across the globe, 22 November will be commemorated as Mitzvah Day, a day which aims to bring people of different faiths together to celebrate their common humanity and their caring and concern for those who have less, those who are needy and those who are lonely.

Mitzvah is a wonderfully expressive Hebrew word which has two distinct meanings, the first being a commandment of the Jewish law and the second being a meritorious or charitable act.

Various religious groups have committed themselves to working together according to the theme, Bringing light to the people of South Africa. These include the Mormon Church, the Catholics and other faith groups.

In line with Mitzvah Day, the Union of Jewish Women (UJW), along with other organisations, have created solar lights aimed at making a difference to many who live in abject poverty in squatter camps. These families have no access to electricity or basic amenities and are forced to rely upon paraffin lamps, which are dangerous.

Added to this is the problem facing disadvantaged students who are unable to do their homework or study at night, as using candles or paraffin lamps is useless.

The interfaith groups will purchase the solar lights which provide up to 60 hours of cost-free lighting. These solar lights are R100 each.

The community is urged to make donations to UJW or to pay R100 for a solar light to help support those in need.
