CHOC Tattoo-a-thon a resounding success

PARKHURST – Support for the Childhood Cancer Foundation (CHOC), was unprecedented on 17 October when local tattoo parlour, Fallen Heroes in Parkhurst, collected more than R37 000 for the charity during the annual Tattoo-a-thon fundraiser, with almost 50 people coming into the shop to #GetInked.

Held at parlours across South Africa, the initiative has grown tremendously since its inception in 2012, and this year was no different with a total of 30 parlours in five provinces participating.

Tattoo-a-thon ambassador for this year, Sebastian Schütte, had a piece done by realist artist Bryan Du Rand on the day and said he was overwhelmed by the support he saw pouring through the doors of the parlour.

“I’m getting three roses done on my left arm in honour of the three most important women in my life,” said Schütte while Du Rand inked away.

“Two represent my grandmothers, and the third, in memory of my mother.”

A cancer survivor himself, Schütte is not only a feast for the eyes when he gets the time to be a male model, but he is also a medical doctor who alternates working with disadvantaged children in Kuwait and working with his philanthropic cause called Panda Crew when he is back home in South Africa.

The representative for Fallen Heroes, Candice Redhead, stated that the reason their studios participate in the fundraiser every year is because the owner of the tattoo shop, Thys Uys, holds the charity close to his heart due to him also being a cancer survivor.

“We had amazing sponsors too who helped make the day a success,” continued Redhead. “Delicious treats were donated by Cupcakes for kids with Cancer and Rockets Restaurant. All in all, it was an awesome day.”

Spokesperson for the CHOC home in Saxonwold, Sophie Ndlovu, said the complete tally for funds raised on the day will only be finalised by mid-November.

“I would just like to sincerely thank all the parlours who took part in the Tattoo-a-thon,” said Ndlovu.

“Thank you for keeping more than hope alive.”
