LATEST: Wits lectures still suspended

JOBURG - Academic activities remain suspended at the University of Witwatersrand on 20 October due to the ongoing protest against a proposed fees increment for 2016.

The university released a statement on 19 October saying the decision about the suspension of lectures would be reviewed depending on further developments.

“Due to the ongoing protests, and concerns for the health and safety of our staff and students, it has been decided that Wits University’s academic project will be suspended for Tuesday 20 October,” read the statement.

“The university will continue to communicate with staff and students, and will issue a notification regarding the resumption of the academic project as soon as circumstances allow.”

The students had expected the institution’s council to give them feedback over their demand to reverse the proposed fees increase for 2016.

However, due to the storming of the Senate House by students the council regrettably was no longer in a position to report in person, as the situation ran contrary to the spirit of the representatives agreement, said the institution.
