Why we love Braam

BRAAMFONTEIN - Braamfontein is a social hub that sees hordes of people pass through the streets each week, and even more on the weekend.

It was around 1930 when the residential area began to turn into a business hub during the developmental boom. It was during this time that many businesses relocated to the area as churches and houses were demolished to make way for them.

Did you know, according to Marc Latilla, from research company, Johannesburg 1912, that Braamfontein has remained largely unchanged since the sudden explosion of development 30 years ago.

It was in 2009 when the area began to be revived by developers.

Today we love Braamfontein for the trendy, artisan venues it boasts such as the Neighbourgoods Market, Great Dane and a number of rooftop venues.

Kitcheners, another popular hangout spot, is based in the old Milner Park Hotel and was used as a DJ venue previously.

Once its popularity grew, it was officially named Kitcheners and still today attracts numerous people for its music, food, and comedy nights.

While De Beer and Juta streets are very popular for their social venues and ‘uniquely Braam’ retail stores, there are also other attractions in the area such as the Protea Hotel Parktonian, which has a fantastic view of the city and neighbouring areas, and De Korte Street which can only be defined as the fast-food strip – not to mention that it is on the outskirts of Braamfontein where Constitution Hill is situated.

Constitution Hill is the establishment that not only allows local people, but also foreigners to the country, to gain insight into the history of South Africa, and the building that was once a prison where Mahatma Gandhi was once imprisoned.

Joburg Theatre is also situated in Braamfontein and holds a number of exciting shows and performances each month.

While the area is only 3.28km² in size, there’s so much for people to do and see in Braamfontein.
