Artists take over Parktown Girls

PARKVIEW – The Artists' Press Limited Edition Print Pop Up Shop that was held at Parktown High School for Girls on 3 October was a smashing success with hundreds of art lovers attending.

The pop-up shop gave locals the chance to pick their favourites from a wide selection of prints by artists such as Anton Kannemeyer, Sam Nhlengethwa, Willem Boshoff, Judith Mason and many more.

The event was hosted by The Artists’ Press who focus on producing limited edition hand-printed lithographs which are printed by master printers in collaboration with the artists.

For the event, there was a special focus on lithographs, monoprints and letterpress and the full range of the artists’ printmaking techniques were on display throughout the day.

Tamar Mason of The Artists’ Press, who was involved in selecting the prints for the pop-up said she must have spent about three months mounting each one, writing up the stories relating to each artwork and labelling each print. “It involved a lot of meditative work, assisted by listening to Leonard Cohen’s Popular Problems album and The Runaway Train Cult,” she laughed.

The months of hard work paid off. “It was successful beyond our imaginings. We really enjoyed meeting people and have been energised by the enthusiasm and excitement generated by the event,” said Mason.

She added that the aim of the event was to show art lovers exactly what the staff at The Artists’ Press do.

“The event is a unique chance for us to show the huge range of work that we have done. We had 284 different prints on display by 39 different artists,” said Mason

In addition to the fantastic range of prints, there was also live music by The Runaway Train Cult, an array of bespoke food trucks and tasty beverages, and a supervised mono print activity for the children who came along.
