UPDATE: Hail of bullets in Craighall Park, police respond

CRAIGHALL PARK – Craighall Park residents reported they heard loud gunfire near Jan Smuts Avenue shortly after 8pm on 6 October.

“I heard several loud bangs in succession and I couldn’t tell if it was fireworks or gunshots,” said local resident, Graeme Shackleford.

“I also couldn’t tell exactly where it was coming from, but it sounded like it was on Jan Smuts Avenue.”

Chairperson of the Craighall Park Residents’ Association, Ryan Roseveare, confirmed that a shootout took place between a group of suspected robbers and police.

“We are awaiting further information,” said Roseveare.

However, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha, spokesperson for Parkview police, was able to shed further light on the incident. “Just after 8pm, one of our patrol vehicles noticed a suspicious looking silver VW Polo with three occupants driving on Jan Smuts Avenue,” he stated.

“Our patrol officers ordered them to pull over and get out of the vehicle. The suspects were armed and began shooting at the officers indiscriminately. The officers then returned fire, but the suspects jumped back into their vehicle and fled the scene at high speed.

“Fortunately, we can report that none of our officers were injured during the shooting.”
