WARNING: Rosebank to be gridlocked

ROSEBANK – Councillor for Ward 117, Tim Truluck, has warned residents living in Dunkeld, Rosebank, Parkwood and Saxonwold that roads will be gridlocked in these areas on 11 October due to two big events that will be taking place.

The one event will be the Spar Ladies Race and will take place in the suburbs east of Oxford Road, which will be closed from Corlett Drive in Illovo to Riviera Road in Killarney.

“If you will be trying to get to the M1, airport or anywhere east of Oxford, or vice versa – that is, coming from the M1 or airport – then you need to take a route via Braamfontein or William Nicol,” said Truluck.

“The eastern side of Oxford Road going towards Braamfontein will be closed from 5am until the last runner has finished. The western side going towards Illovo will be used for traffic going both north and south. Expect some congestion.”

The other event being held on the day will be the Jozi Freedom Ride, a cycle ride which forms part of the EcoMobility World Festival.

Throughout the ride, various rolling road closures will be set up as the cyclists move through Sandton, heading south through the suburbs of Parktown, Parkwood, and Saxonwold, then onto Yeoville. Riders will then cycle through Observatory, head north into Wynberg onto the city’s new cycle lanes in Alexandra, and then back into Sandton.

“While they won’t actually overlap, together they will create havoc in the northern suburbs and stretch Metro police resources,” Truluck continued. “This will, in effect, create an island that will trap and isolate all the residents and businesses in Dunkeld, Rosebank, Parkwood and Saxonwold.

“It will also create a double barrier with Jan Smuts Avenue and Oxford Road either blocked or restricted.”

Other suburbs in the area that will be affected by the bike race will be Illovo, Dunkeld West, Parktown North, Parkview, Westcliff and Forest Town.

“The ride starts at 7am, so expect the first riders about 30 minutes afterwards. I expect the following roads will be closed from before 7am: Melville Road, Bompas Road, Jan Smuts Avenue, Upper Park Drive, Ettrick Road, Oxford Road and Victoria Road,” Truluck concluded. “They will probably remain closed until 10am.”
