No proof of pickpocketing gang on Corlett Drive

JOBURG - Patrick Modetse, who was pickpocketed in March, indicated to North Eastern Tribune that although there are suspicions of a gang targeting pedestrians walking along Corlett Drive in Illovo, there is no evidence to support this.

Modetse said, “I have inquired with local police and a number of security companies and no one can confirm that there is a specific group that steals from people here.”

However, he added, “I saw a man on the corner of Corlett [Drive] and Atholl-Oaklands Road closely follow two females. I have become wary because of how I was robbed in March.”

He explained how the suspect edged himself closer to the women and removed a purse from one of their handbags and walked away.

“I saw this at around 5pm, and at that time of day there are a lot of people who gather to catch buses on Atholl-Oaklands Road,” added Modeste.

“The people need to be aware that this is happening. These guys are good at what they do.”

Sergeant Nurse Sanyane of Norwood police said, “This is an age-old problem throughout the country. The public needs to be aware of their surroundings and always look out for suspicious individuals. Make sure you keep your valuables stowed away safely.”
