Welcome to My World

PARKWOOD – David Krut Projects will present a solo exhibition by artist Senzo Shabangu, titled My World, for the month of October.

Shabangu originally comes from a small village in Driefontein in Mpumalanga, and since 2010 he has been confronted with the pressures of the city as well as the emotional aspects of migration, resulting in a drastic change of perspective. While his earlier works are filled with unfamiliar city landscapes, his new body of work has shifted. Now they display the intricacies that define the city from within, buildings have intense close-up views that illustrate his deeper involvement and connection to Johannesburg.

The coming exhibition will be Shabangu’s fourth with David Krut Projects and consists of a number of drawings, linocuts and unique artworks on paper. My World focuses on the artist’s journey of critical self-exploration, tackling the themes of negotiation of control, the creative process and the ability to create and sustain.

Shabangu’s process of negotiating control begins with identifying his position within a context. The context is explained in a triptych of three linocuts, which feature as the centrepiece of the exhibition. All three of these works are introspective and reveal the artist’s deepest thoughts and feelings through self-portraiture.

My World runs from 3 to 31 October at David Krut Projects, 142 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood.
