Spotlight on crime trends in Parkview

PARKVIEW – The Parkview Police Community Policing Forum (CPF) held their monthly meeting at Parkview Police Station on 10 September to discuss current matters regarding crime and community safety.

The forum acts as an oversight committee for Parkview police to ensure that the station enforces the law to their full capacity and also to create communication between police and the community. The meeting comprised analyses of crime trends by police members including crimes that have created the most cause for concern over the last month, residential burglaries, motor vehicle thefts and theft out of motor vehicles.

Prevalence of criminal activity was said to increase on Thursdays, which peaked on Saturdays in the late evening hours.

Parktown North remains a crime hotspot, although police were glad to announce that the number of contact crimes throughout the precinct has declined significantly.

Police warned residents not to leave valuables near windows within their homes or offices, as police have seen an increase of objects such as cellphones, laptops, tablets and other goods being stolen if they are kept within arm’s length of an open window.

Station commander, Colonel Thembekile Kubone appealed to Parkview residents who report crimes with the station to provide their full co-operation, citing a recent incident where a resident phoned police to report a problem, yet chased responding officers away and obstructed them from fulfilling their professional duties.

Chairperson Geoff Klass has also asked skilled professionals to lend their services to the forum on a voluntary basis, and details of such volunteers will be compiled into a database which can be referred to when necessary.

“This way, residents can help to conserve and protect the community they live in,” Klass said.

“We aim to build a symbiotic relationship between the forum and such professionals who can assist in matters relevant to their professions.”

Klass encouraged community members and residents’ associations to attend the next meeting to be held at the station on 21 October at 6.30pm.

“Community support is very much needed to aid the police and the forum to fight crime to the best of our abilities,” Klass said in conclusion, alluding to the fact that when it comes to bringing criminals to book, the police are the only ones with the ability to do so.
