Man arrested for the death of toddler

JOBURG - A man in his early 20s was arrested at the corner of Kruis and Frederick streets in the Joburg CBD in connection with the alleged murder of a toddler on 17 September.

According to Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele of Joburg Central Police Station, the suspect allegedly beat the toddler to death at an informal settlement at the corner of Von Wielligh and Wemmer Jubilee streets.

According to Mbele, the mother of the toddler was outside when she heard the shouting from her boyfriend (the suspect) and upon investigation she found that her child was motionless and had bruises on his head and body.

Mbele said, “The mother and the suspect took the child to the fire station on the corner of Kruis and Frederick streets where he (the toddler) was declared dead by paramedics.”

According to Mbele, the suspect attempted to flee, however, police managed to apprehend him.

The suspect is due to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on 21 September facing charges of murder.
