New book exposes corruption in Cricket SA

MELROSE ARCH – Having the courage to speak out against injustices in today’s day and age is often unheard of, but this didn’t stop former cricket administrator, Mtutuzeli Nyoka, from writing a bold exposé on corruption within the game of South African cricket.

The book titled Deliberate Concealment was launched at Exclusive Books in Melrose Arch on 30 August and in it, Nyoka gives his personal insight on his time spent as president of Cricket South Africa (CSA), the irregularities he became aware of, and his fight to let the truth prevail.

An avid cricket lover, Nyoka was appointed as head of CSA in 2008, but was dismissed in 2011 because he questioned the integrity of those with whom he was working.

When retired Judge Chris Nicholson conducted an investigation into CSA, his findings on the corruption and maladministration in the game were damning, particularly in terms of former CSA CEO, Gerald Majola.

The book has allowed Nyoka to share his behind-the-scenes experiences and personal journey as events unfolded, including his own mistakes, and the repercussions of the scandal on the game of cricket in South Africa.

Dr Ali Bacher, who attended the launch has sung Nyoka’s praises for having the courage and determination to write the book.

“During his tenure as president of Cricket South Africa, Mtutuzeli Nyoka fought almost alone to expose corruption and improve corporate governance within the higher echelons of South African cricket,” said Bacher.

“For this, the cricket community of South Africa owe him a great deal of gratitude.”

Nyoka currently lives in Johannesburg where he practises as an ear, nose and throat surgeon. His first novel, I Speak to the Silent, was published in 2004 to widespread critical acclaim, and his second novel, A Hill of Fools was published in 2013. Deliberate Concealment is his first work of non-fiction.
