Varsity Pride at Wits

JOBURG - The 2015 Varsity Pride is currently taking place across the various Wits campuses until 4 September.

Pride is an annual event which brings awareness to and celebrates the diversity of LGBTIAQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, asexual, queer and other sexual orientations and gender identities)

The theme associated with the Pride this year is People Change Spaces.

The 2015 Varsity Pride recognizes that people who identify as LGBTIAQ+ often face multiple forms of intersecting oppressions and aims to bring people who are in support of LGBTIAQ+ issues together.

The programme combines a series of initiatives which are educative and interactive. Every day from 11am until 3pm across the Wits campuses, Safe Zones@Wits allies and staff will operate information stalls, offering people resources and information, and explaining different sexual identities and sexual health.

The 2015 Varsity Pride is hosted by the Wits Transformation and Employment Equity Office, Drama for Life and Wits SRC in partnership with UJ Liberati and other organisations, and through its series of exciting events it will include a drawing marathon, youth forums, a panel discussion and symposium on transgender and asexual identities, a queer wedding and a solidarity march which will unify the diverse personalities, sexual orientations and gender identities at Wits.

On 2 September an Academic Symposium with Wits academics will be held to learn about LGBTIAQ+ research.

The week will be filled with a number of forums and panel discussions all related to LGBTIAQ+.
