Festwoche for 125 years

PARKTOWN – For a school to become a few decades old is an impressive feat by African standards, however the Deutsche Internationale Schule (or German International School) can boast that they have successfully been teaching local pupils for a whopping 125 years now.

Come celebrate the Deutsche Internationale Schule's 125th anniversary from 11 to 18 September.

In order to celebrate this momentous anniversary, the school will host a grand Festwoche, or festival week, which will be proppenvoll with all things German, from apple strudel to a performance of the patriotic theatre production Woyzeck by the school’s pupils.

The festival will be held from 11 to 18 September and will be open to all who would like to experience a taste of true German culture.

The events for the festival are planned as follows:

11 September: Opening concert to commence at 7pm, where 100 musicians from all the German schools in southern Africa will perform under the direction of the well-known conductor, Richard Cock
12 September: The official opening ceremony of the festival is scheduled for 10am. Speeches will be given by well-known German politician, Dagmar Freitag (member of the German Bundestag); the German Ambassador to South Africa; and representatives of German and South African educational departments. Talented pupils will also do a few recitals
13 September: A church service by Bishop Müller will be held at the Friedenskirche in Hillbrow, which was built in 1912 next to the school’s original location before it moved to Parktown in 1969. Coffee and cake will be served
14 September: At 7pm, pupils from the school will perform a theatre production of the popular Woyzeck, written by Georg Büchner
15 September: A day dedicated to pupils at the school with the opportunity for them to simply enjoy themselves
16 September: A second performance of Woyzeck will be held at 7pm
17 September: The school plans to continue their contribution to a greener Johannesburg by participating in Arbor Day
18 September: Glitz and glamour is the order of the evening when the school will host a gala evening or festball, as a festive conclusion to the week with dance and entertainment.

Entrance is free for all events, except for the gala evening for which it is required to buy individual tickets, or book a full table of 10 seats. The school advises that those wishing to attend any of the events, reserve their tickets with reception beforehand.
