SAF walking tour #1: First Chinatown walking tour:

(26 September)

The first Chinatown on the edge of Ferreirasdorp is one of those spaces where a Chinese cultural enclave has formed. This area was occupied by the first wave of Cantonese miners who descended on Johannesburg. This precinct was known as Malay Camp, or Malaikem as the Chinese called it. Over time, this hidden space was re-appropriated by the Cantonese. What was a mining camp then transformed into a Chinese cultural hub of services and trades.

The tour starts at The Shed@1Fox at 10am.

This session, which will also be hosted at The Orbit, is called You can roll it, but I wouldn’t smoke it. Using dung beetles as the theme, Marcus Byrne will take guests on a tour around South Africa to show how evolution has shaped a simple animal’s relationship with its food and enabled it to overcome the challenges of life at the back end of the food chain. The Science and Cocktails sessions, which happen once a month, touch on greater issues affecting the country and aim to combat them – a talk which is followed with beautiful jazz and cocktails.

EXHIBITIONS

Sexpo:

(24 to 27 September)

Sexpo returns to Gallagher Estate in Midrand with the theme, Rio Carnival, and guests are invited to dress up and enjoy the exhibition.

The Rio Carnival is most commonly known for its fiery parties, but even more than that, it’s known for the sensual, barely-there outfits donned by the ladies. It is for this reason that the theme was chosen, allowing organisers to give the public an experience that is not only sexy but vibrant and playful. There will be a number of theatres, rooms and lounges which will each host different entertainment acts which include industry experts throughout the duration of the expo.
