Snoozing suspects arrested

PARKVIEW – After criminals committed a robbery in Parkhurst earlier this month, one of the suspects inadvertently left behind a cellphone as they made their getaway, giving Parkview police sufficient leads to trace the suspects to Alexandra.

The robbery occurred on 13 August, and a week later, on 20 August, the Parkview police detective tracing team led by Lieutenant Menzi Miya, apprehended two suspects in Alexandra who are allegedly linked to the house robbery.

Parkview police were not acting alone in this investigation, as they received a substantial amount of assistance from Cortac Tactical Security and their fearless tracking dog, Viper.

Describing the robbery, Cortac spokesperson, Darren Greenberg said, “The homeowners in Parkhurst were seeing out guests shortly after 8.30pm when a white vehicle stopped outside the premises. Two armed men then exited the vehicle, held up the victims and took them inside the home.”

The homeowners managed to press the panic button which allowed the security company to respond immediately.

Officers dispatched to the scene climbed over the property wall and saw the victims tied up inside the home. The suspects noticed the officers and fled, but not before dropping all the stolen items, including the personal cellphone.

Greenberg said the security company was able to assist the Parkview police by retrieving vital information from the suspect’s cellphone using high-tech cellphone technology.

“Both the suspects were found sleeping at their respective addresses in Alexandra when the police pounced,” confirmed spokesperson for Parkview Police Station, Sergeant Lloyd Ramovha.

Three firearms were recovered, two handguns and a revolver, with the serial numbers filed off.

“Just short of 200 live ammunition rounds for different calibre firearms were also recovered,” Ramovha added.

“Further investigations are currently being conducted at this stage to establish if the duo could be linked to other cases in the area. It also came to light that the younger suspect is, in fact, a recent parolee from Johannesburg Prison.”

“With three firearms out of circulation, innocent lives are being spared, rendering our communities a safer place to live in,” added Parkview Police Station commander Colonel Thembelule Kubone.
