Woman who had her finger bitten during armed robbery in Killarney speaks out

KILLARNEY - Woman whose finger was bitten in an armed robbery says there was no help from police officials and security company.

An armed robbery in 8th Street in Killarney left two people shaken.

Valma Muir and Dave Andrews were parked in front Muir’s ex-husband’s complex waiting at the intercom to get in. They felt a slight bump on the back of their car.

“It was so slight that we didn’t think anything of it until we heard banging on our windows. It was armed men banging on our windows with their guns. They came in a Silver C-class Mercedez,” explained Muir.

She said that while the two suspects pointed their guns at them another stood at the gate and pointed his gun at the guard house, one suspect remained in the car.

“A gun was pointed at my head, I just put my hands up and said ‘okay, okay’. He then asked for my watch, I gave it to him, it was all so very quick,” said Andrews.

A video of the incident emerged on Facebook a day after the robbery.

Muir said, “I felt nothing; I was just thinking ‘well this is it I have to get through this’. The guy that was on my side seemed very hyped up. I tried to calm him down and asked what it was that he wanted.”

The suspect asked for her rings from both hands. She handed him the ring from her right hand but could not get the one on the left off.

“He then proceeded to bite the stone on the ring, but he couldn’t get it off. The other guy from Dave’s side came over and told him to just rip it off. He tore some of my skin off my finger when he did,” she said.

According to Andrews, ADT took about 30 minutes before they responded, the guard informed them that he had pressed the panic button, but it did not work. They allegedly did not receive any help from the Hillbrow police either.

In a conflicting statement, Theunis Kotze, general manager of ADT Inland Region said that as the guard was moving down onto the floor, he pressed the panic button alerting ADT. Kotze claimed an ADT reaction officer was dispatched and arrived in under 15 minutes.

A day after the incident, Hillbrow police spokesperson, Sergeant Nduduzi Zondo, said that no armed robbery had been reported to them.

Andrews stated that they had tried several times to call the officer who attended to the scene but had no luck. As a result of this Andrews said they went to the Parkview Police Station to report the incident and have since been SMSed a case number.
