Walking for extraordinary people

WANDERERS – For the sixth consecutive year, the Bidvest Group will once again host their nationwide Bidvest Unity Walk on 16 August with the aim of raising awareness for people with disabilities, and particularly the QuadPara Association of South Africa (Qasa).

Staff from the company will join their families and friends in Joburg, Durban, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth for the annual walk which has grown tremendously since its inception in 2010, with numbers increasing from 18 000 entrants to an excess of 80 000 set to walk this year.

Chief executive of the Bidvest Group, Brian Joffe, has again generously committed to donating one wheelchair for every 75 employees who complete the walk, just as the company has done at previous Bidvest Unity Walks.

“The walk is a fun family event done in the name of goodwill as we walk for those who can’t,” Joffe elaborated.

“It is a day in which the Bidvest Group companies can also celebrate this beautiful country, our health and our families. I will be at the start line myself come 16 August and look forward to participating in the day’s proceedings.”

Ari Seirlis, CEO of Qasa, felt that this is a powerful awareness event which will allow for further improvement of mobility for those who are physically disabled and have limited access to mobility aids, such as wheelchairs.

“The sweat and tears throughout the walk on 16 August will bring tears of joy and freedom through the distribution of wheelchairs by Qasa to people who do not enjoy the same mobility,” stated Seirlis.

“Qasa is extremely grateful on behalf of all the people with mobility impairments that the staff of Bidvest unite in a walk to make a difference in the lives of people with disabilities, especially those with mobility impairments.”

The event begins at 8am and organisers have asked local residents to please be patient during the morning’s walk as they keep in mind that it is all in the name of charity.
