MEC pays tribute to slain officers

JOBURG - MEC for Community Safety Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane paid tribute to the fallen law enforcement officers who died at the hands of criminals.

Nkosi-Malobane, speaking at a press briefing said, “My heart is bleeding from the gaping wound in my soul. I am here today representing the voiceless men and women in blue who were brutally murdered because of their selflessness [and] commitment to serve and protect. I am representing our fallen heroes who chose to put their lives on the line in an attempt to ensure the citizens of Gauteng are, and feel, safe.”

The Gauteng City Region has, in recent months, recorded an increase in the number of police killings in the line of duty. In the past three months alone, six police officers, including a Metro policeman, have been killed in the line of duty.

Nkosi-Malobane said the men and women in blue were parents, brothers, sisters and friends, and there should be an unprecedented outcry from all sectors of society condemning the brutal murder of these police officers.

“Are we so immune to the police killings that these do not warrant public condemnation?” she asked.

“Have we done enough to show support? I certainly don’t think so.”

She said there was a need for the public and the police to work in unison to eradicate crime.

“In the midst of frustration and despair, we should always remain focused by understanding that we have a common enemy called crime, therefore, let us refuse to be held to ransom by negative perceptions against our own law enforcement officers.

“We need to strengthen the fight against criminal elements by being a strong force and united in our endeavour to eradicate all criminal elements.”
