Local school receives DeskBags

SUNNINGHILL – Marsh Africa recently teamed up with a few members of the Golden Lions rugby team to hand out more than 590 DeskBags to underprivileged schoolchildren at Sefikeng Primary School.

In celebration of Mandela Month, Marsh Africa, which has an ongoing commitment to education, ran an exciting programme for the students on 29 July. The school, which is based on the Leeuwkop Prison grounds, received a number of DeskBags which are made from recycled vinyl billboard materials and can be used as portable desks and eco-friendly school bags.

The students were treated to rugby clinics run by a few members of the Lions rugby team, as well as a fun party complete with boerewors rolls, chips and cool drinks.

Minster of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga, stated that this country has over 3.1 million pupils who go without the fundamental necessity of a school desk every day.

Jurie Erwee, chief executive officer at Marsh Africa said, “Although we cannot transform education, we can, however, make a valuable contribution. This is seen in the way we approach the Marsh’s Boost a School programme.”

The programme partners with a number of schools across the country and provides support such as pupil leadership and activation, teachers’ support and resilience, parental empowerment, career guidance and building cohesion throughout the schools and their communities.

“While we strive to make a real and remarkable difference by donating DeskBags for free to as many underprivileged schools and communities as possible, we realise that this problem is just too big to try and tackle ourselves. It is only by partnering with corporate sponsors such as Marsh Africa, that we can truly help alleviate the educational struggles of tomorrow’s leaders,” Shannon Roscher, co-founder of DeskBags concluded.
