JOBURG - On 28 July media reports and social media were consumed with the news that a Zimbabwean national treasure, Cecil the Lion had been killed by an American dentist.

Dr Water Palmer, a cosmetic dentist from Minnesota, reportedly paid around R700 000 to hunt and kill the lion with a bow and arrow on 1 July.

When the news broke that Cecil had been killed, social media erupted with comments about the incident.

Palmer’s name was eventually revealed and people began posting angry comments on his dental practice’s Facebook page. People also started to look into Palmer’s past and it was discovered that he had also previously hunted leopards, fallow deer and ibexes.

Protesters have taken to leaving stuffed animals outside Palmer’s private residence and his practice.

In a statement made to Colorado News Palmer said he was unaware that Cecil The Lion was a “local favourite”.

He added that he deeply regretted that his pursuit of an activity he loves and practices responsibly and legally resulted in the death of Cecil.
