School employee becomes victim of RDP housing scam

JOBURG - IRS Forensic Investigations (IRS) are assisting an employee of Maryvale School to investigate an alleged case of land theft after he discovered that his stand had been sold without his permission.

Joel Mahlatji received the stand in Winnie Mandela Park near Thembisa, as well as a land subsidy from the Gauteng Provincial Housing Board in 2000.

IRS founder and chairperson Chad Thomas said, “Mahlatji is a victim of a fairly common theft …in areas where land has been earmarked for development.”

The company is assisting Mahlatji on a pro bono basis.

Thomas said many stands and Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses were allegedly hijacked by unscrupulous people involved in criminal syndicates. In some cases corrupt ward councillors are involved.

According to Thomas, IRS found that a case of theft does indeed exist after they perused the paperwork provided by Mahlatji and made the necessary enquiries.
