14-year-old back home after allegedly going on shooting rampage (WATCH)

BEREA - A boy (14) who allegedly fired shots at people walking in Berea on 23 July is back home.

On 23 July the boy reportedly casually walked down Lily Avenue in Berea and started randomly shooting anyone he saw.

He first tried to shoot a man in a parked car, but missed him but then fired at a pedestrian, also missing him.

The boy then turned into Alexandra Street and shot another pedestrian in the leg.

He then walked up to a 42-year-old woman and fired two close range shots at her, hitting her in her head and her arm.

He started to walk away from the woman but turned around and fired two more shots at her, hitting her again in her arm and her abdomen. It was later discovered that the boy appeared to have known the woman as they live in the same informal settlement.

After shooting the woman the boy continued to walk down the street, firing shots at pedestrians.

Security personnel and a bystander started chasing the boy but the boy ran ahead of them, trying to make his way to Barnato Park School where, it is alleged, he wanted to shoot his brother.

As the boy was running, he shot himself in the foot but continued towards the school despite his wound.

He eventually ran out of bullets outside the school, where security personnel apprehended him.

According to Constable Thabo Malatji of Yeoville police the boy was not taken into custody because he is a minor.

“The suspect is a minor and therefore we had to treat him as such. He is 14-year-old,” he said.

The boy is set to appear in court on 28 July.

Malatji said the boy is facing charges of attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammuntion.

The boy’s father will also reportedly be charged with negligent handling of a firearm.
