Girl power at St Mary’s School

WAVERLEY – On the day before Mandela Day, Dr Zaheeda Adam of FEED and the Girl Rising movement addressed the schoolgirls of St Mary’s School in Waverley.

Adam bRought to light the importance of using the time we have to make a difference in other people’s lives, especially on days like Mandela Day. She pointed out that in many parts of the world, girls’ education is hindered due to a lack of resources and inequality.

She also mentioned that many girls do not go to school for several days each month because they do not have the necessary sanitary towels. In the hopes to lighten the challenges experienced by these girls, all of the girls in the St Mary’s Senior School got to work while being supported by the Girl Rising movement.

The girls spent the afternoon decorating orange drawstring bags and then filled them with stationery and a ‘period pack’ which was made up of a pair of panties and sanitary pads or tampons. The bags will be handed out to the girls of the Adelaide Tambo School in Soweto, which happens to be the only facility in Soweto for the physically disabled. They will be given to the Coronation Training Centre, which services disabled, remedial and autistic children; and to the Alexandra Secondary School for Girls. All of the items were bought using money that was donated by St Mary’s families in the first term.
