UPDATE: Woman and her pet cat rescued from burning building

KILLARNEY - A woman and her pet cat were rescued from a burning apartment building in Killarney on the night of 22 July. 

UPDATE: 23 July 2015, 3pm – According to Netcare 911spokesperson, Santi Steinmann, paramedics responded to the scene of a burning building where they rescued the pair.

“The rescued woman said that she noticed smoke and went to look for her cat before trying to exit the building,” said Steinmann.

Steinmann added that the paramedics assessed the woman and found that she was in a serious condition. She was transported to a private hospital for further medical care, and her cat was transported to an animal medical facility for smoke inhalation treatment and was kept overnight.

The fire was put out after the rescue and no one else was injured in the blaze.

Steinmann added, “The woman and her pet cat are [now] in a healthy condition and will be fine.

“The cause of the fire is being investigated.”

Initial report: 23 July 2015, 8am – According to News24 paramedics and firefighters from Rosebank Fire Department attended the scene and found that part of the building had caught alight.

Firefighters entered the building and rescued the woman and her pet cat.

The woman reportedly noticed the smoke in her apartment but went to search for her cat before she tried to exit the building.

Assessment of the woman revealed that she was in a serious condition so she was transported to hospital for further medical care while her feline companion was transported to a veterinary facility for smoke inhalation treatment.

Shortly after the rescue, firefighters managed to quell the fire and no one else was injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
