Empowering, educating and uplifting lives

HOUGHTON- The empowering of people through education, skills and development is a goal for educational NGO, ORT SA.

Along with the many projects undertaken by ORT SA, there is a pilot project called the second chance initiative which gives pupils from Alexandra who failed maths and physical sciences and thus matric, a whole year’s study in mathematics and physical sciences lessons.

The organisation takes in pupils who want to get a better understanding of the two subjects with the aim of giving them the opportunity to better their marks and rewrite their exams again in December

The organisation has made the initiative a top priority in a bid to give hope to pupils, who, even if they fail, can try again and achieve their desired goal of completing matric.

Mologadi Setekge, who is participating in the initiative said, “I am happy to be given such an opportunity, the teachers help me to understand mathematics and physical sciences much better.”

Setekge added that the organisation also offers free computer lessons as well as free transport to get to ORT SA head office in Houghton.

The pilot project has been dubbed successful, and plans to extend the initiative to other areas are underway.

“The aim of all these projects is to empower, educate and uplift a life,” said marketing and communications manager of ORT SA, Marcelle Ravid.

“One tool that will enable people to rise above their circumstances is education, particularly education that leads to the acquisition of marketable tools,” said Nelson Mandela at an ORT SA Graduation Ceremony in 1993.
