Gambling machines confiscated from Fairmount Bowling Club

FAIRMOUNT - The Fairmount Bowling club in Fairmount was raidED by the Gauteng Gambling Board (GGB) assisted by Captain Makgopela from the South African Police Service's Liquor Enforcement (Saps) for possession of illegal gambling machines on 9 July.

Lucky Lukhwareni from the gambling board said, “Saps seized two Cherry Master machines and handed [them] over to us for storage and testing.”

According to Lukhwareni, a representative from the Fairmount bowling club was arrested and will appear in court in August.

Ward 72 councillor Steven Kruger said, “Members from the South African Police Service and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police confirmed that they were both involved with the raid on the club.”

According to an agreement that was signed on 25 February, 2009 between the City of Joburg Property Company and the lessee of the Fairmount Bowling Club, the grounds were only to be used for sporting events and incidental social activities. Gambling on the property is in contravention of the lease.
