Metered taxi driver arrested for string of robberies

SANDRINGHAM - Mfanafuthi Ngema, who has metered taxis operating in Alexandra, hired a new driver who has been arrested along with three other suspects for alleged robberies.

Ngema trusted his new employee to fulfil his daily duties by transporting commuters to their desired destinations. However, the driver had other stops to make.

Sandringham police were tipped off by a security company on 15 July when the driver of a white Toyota Avanza was behaving suspiciously.

The route for the taxi driver was in Alexandra, however, the vehicle was tracked out of Alex and down George Avenue in Sandringham.

Four suspects have to spend the night in Sandringham Police Station after allegedly robbing people of their personal belongings.

Lieutenant Abram Thobejane from Sandringham police said, “Four suspects were arrested on 15 July at about 7 pm, with two suspects in their teens and two in their early 20s. The suspects were arrested for common robbery and possession of suspected robbed goods.”

“The suspects allegedly stole two cellphones, a Samsung tablet, bank cards, an undisclosed amount of cash, as well as cosmetic products.”

It is alleged that the suspects drove around looking for opportunities to steal from people. It is also alleged that the suspects robbed a 24-year-old woman in Kinfauns Street in Sydenham.

Police found her handbag in the car when the suspects were arrested.

Lieutenant Abram Thobejane from Sandringham police arrested four suspects who were travelling in the Toyota Avanza and allegedly robbing people of their goods.

Ngema said, “I am worried about my car, I was not involved with their criminal activity.”

Ngema said he had trusted the driver. “But he could not wait a day longer to rob me and other people,” he lamented.

The suspects will appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court soon.
