Brazil Fashion Week to South African Fashion Week

Joburg-based designer, Palesa Mokubung, has made waves with her fashion – not only in South Africa, but internationally too.

Mokubung’s headquarters of creativity and creation are deep in the heart of the bustling Joburg CBD.

Her clothing line is called Mantsho and is a Sesotho expression which, loosely translated, means ‘a beautiful complexion’. She founded the fashion line in 2004 and since then it has gained significant momentum in the world of fashion.

Mokubung won a Fashion and Innovation Award at the Mbokodo Women in the Arts Awards last year.

Her unique clothing designs have made her a hot topic on the lips of fashion show goers, producers and the who’s who of South Africa’s social scene.

Thandiswa Mazwai, former Bongo Maffin band member; Kgomotso Matsunyane, Kaya Fm radio presenter and musician; and Simphiwe Dana are just a few of the socialites and talents who don Mokubung’s brand regularly.

This young talent, however, doesn’t only supply her creations to the country’s elite, she also sells the clothes through large clothing store chains including Edgars and online shopping platforms such as Spree and Zando.

Mantsho has also been showcased across a number of countries in Africa and America.

Most recently, she showcased her line at Brazil Fashion Week in April, where the response to her latest collection was nothing less than overwhelming.

Her next big show will be South African Fashion Week in October, where designers from across the country will showcase their autumn/winter collections.

Until then she is still keeping busy, having recently returned from Nigeria, where she was working her fashion magic.

This young talent’s success has been a long time in the making and with the recent recognition she’s received, there’s no slowing this fashionista down.
