Things to know when buying art

HOUGHTON - Art education was explained at an art discussion leading up to the Turbine Art Fair.

Imagine buying something for R5 000 and in years to come it quadruples in value.

At an art discussion held in Houghton entitled Brains, not Money, the value of art was discussed and how one can either grow into or outgrow a piece of art.

The famous painting by Pablo Picasso Tete d’ arlequin that cost R28 000 in 1973 was compared to the sculpture of George Harrison by Tienie Pritchard which originally cost R500 000.

Picasso’s painting had grown in value over the years to a whopping R30 million, whereas the sculpture’s value had not increased.

This comparison illustrated that it does not necessarily mean a piece of art that is expensive is the right choice for an investment. “We also wanted to point out to people that one does not need a lot of money to love art and be able to purchase it. All that is needed is an open mind to see the growth of the art,” said marketing director of auctioneers Strauss & Co, Stephan Welz.

The discussion was especially useful to those who would be attending the annual Turbine Art Fair.

Marketing director of the Forum Company which will be hosting the Turbine Art Fair from 16 to 19 July in Newtown , Glynis Hyslop commented, “It is really just about educating one’s eye on art and how with the proper education it can pay in dividends.”

Artist Nel Erasmus advised, “Anything that can prompt looking at art with an unbiased eye can widen one’s horizon in so many ways.”

Erasmus’ advice to people wanting to purchase art is the following:

  • Buy what you like
  • Don’t look for the well-known names, you never know how the value of a piece of art can grow
  • Do your research
  • Grow with your art, if you feel you have outgrown it, sell it.
