Maboneng’s pop-up shop for the homeless on Mandela Day

MABONENG - There is a great initiative by Paballo Ya Botha [Caring for the people], a community organisation which serves homeless and destitute people in Johannesburg, of having a pop-up store.

On Nelson Mandela Day, the lovely urban park, Common Ground in the Maboneng Precinct, will be filled with donated clothes and toiletries. The concept of having a pop-up store is to have a day filled with respect and caring and hearts brimming with love and sharing. The mural of Nelson Mandela will bring a sense of benevolence in line with Madiba’s ethos.

The clothes, blankets and other goods that will benefit the homeless, will be set up on these grounds. Those in need will not only have the opportunity to select clothes but toiletries as well.

Each person will get a voucher allowing them to take a certain number of products. They will be serving food and a warm cup of tea, as well as helping out with CVs.

If you would like to get involved you can donate the following:

  • Clean blankets in good condition
  • Clothing and shoes in good condition and clean. Men, women and children’s clothing is required, as well as shoes in all sizes
  • Toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, razors, shampoo and conditioner
  • If you don’t have any goods to give, you can make a financial donation. All donations go to servicing the beneficiaries of Paballo. The money will be used to buy goods for the day, as well as to keep their weekly soup kitchen operating
  • You can help on the day by volunteering your time. Paballo will need people to help keep clothes in order and to help with general logistics.
