Yeoville woman arrested for concealment of birth

YEOVILLE - Yeoville police received a call from the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital on 3 July regarding a woman who was brought in by ambulance who had allegedly performed an illegal abortion in Yeoville.

Upon arrival at the hospital in Parktown, police found a 33-year-old female who was then interviewed and allegedly confessed to the crime.

A concealment of birth charge is applicable to any person who hides that a child died before, during or after birth. If the suspect is found guilty of the offence they may be liable to pay a fine or face imprisonment.

Constable Thabo Malatji of Yeoville police said, “She informed us that she performed it with the help of an unknown male in Yeoville at the corner of Hendon and Joe Slovo roads.”

The woman was arrested and detained at Yeoville Police Station. She is expected to appear in Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court soon on a charge of concealment of birth.
