Innovative theatre productions on your doorstep

JOBURG - Wits Theatre will host 16 of the latest and most innovative productions at the much-anticipated 969 Festival which runs from 15 to 26 July and promises an exciting and eclectic line-up.

This year it will push the boundaries across continents with its diverse range of topics ranging from the life of a Holocaust orphan, a funeral in Soweto and a women in India.

Local productions at the festival will include Kafka’s Ape based on Franz Kafka’s short story A Report To An Academy, which is an intriguing interrogation on identity and what it means to be human.

The festival will also include a zany black comedy with three sisters locked in a basement awaiting their father, which is directed by Phala O Phala and stars Tony Miyambo as Red Peter, who also happens to play a grief-stricken son attempting to come to terms with his father’s death in Cenotaph of Dan wa Moriri.

One of the many productions is based on two girls going nowhere, sitting on the side of a road. Actress and Girl is a whimsical and dark story about the kindness and cruelty of strangers.

Information about the productions can be found on the theatre’s website.
