Extraordinary things you didn’t know about Joburg

JOBURG - Joburg is a beautiful place that we at City Buzz absolutely adore, so we're filling you in on a few facts about our city.

Johannesburg is the home to many cool and trendy places including The Bioscope and Rolling Cherry in Maboneng, the beautiful rejuvenated Turret building in the CBD, and the numerous rooftop hangouts from Braam to Marshaltown.

The city has begun to reform from its dodgy image, so it’s important to remember where it started.

Here are a few facts about Joburg that we’re sure you didn’t now before.

The tallest tower on the African continent was built right here in the Joburg CBD and has stood the test of time – perhaps you guessed it – it’s the Hillbrow Tower which stands 269m high in the formerly bustling Hillbrow suburb.

This means that it takes an egg one minute longer to boil in the less dense Joburg air than it does in Cape Town or Durban.

Founded on 4 October 1886, almost 130 years ago during the gold rush, Joburg is still one of the youngest major cities in the world.

Joburg is the world’s largest city that is not built on a coastline or near a waterway, however, more than half the cargo that arrives at the ports of the country are transported to City Deep in the CBD.

Joburg was rebuilt four times in the space of one century, having been transformed from a tented camp to a world-class modern city.

The greater Johannesburg area has also seen the opening of a number of American-style stores and social hangouts, including Bounce Inc (a trampoline house) in Midrand, Rolling Cherry (a roller skating rink) in Maboneng and many outdoor markets in various areas.
