Community comes to rescue of mugging victim

YEOVILLE - A man was arrested on the corner of Hopkins and Bedford streets in Yeoville on 6 July for robbery at about 7.30pm.

According to Constable Thabo Malatji of Yeoville police, the suspect was with two accomplices when they approached a man, threatened him with a knife, and stole his money and cellphone.

Malatji said, “While the incident was taking place, members of the community noticed what was going on and went to the aid of the victim. They managed to apprehend one of the suspects.”

According to Malatji, the police were called to the scene and the suspect was arrested. A knife in his possession was confiscated in his possession.

“We extend our appreciation to the members of the community for the arrest and in ensuring that criminals are brought to book,” added Malatji.

The suspect was detained at Yeoville Police Station and is expected to appear in the Hillbrow Magistrates’ Court facing charges of robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon.
