The return of the Cub

YEOVILLE - A fraudster who conned an elderly man out of his beloved Opel Kadett Cub a few months ago was recently nabbed by Alberton police and the vehicle returned to its rightful owner.

The Yeoville resident, who is in his late 70s and wishes not to be named, said he had enjoyed many good memories in his Kadett which he has owned for over 20 years.

The victim said, “He claimed to be a man of faith and gained my trust. He came across as friendly and helpful. However, when I let him use my car he never returned it.”

Chad Thomas, the founder of IRS Forensic Investigations said, “The vehicle’s details and description were circulated on the Saps network by Yeoville police and a case of motor theft was opened.

“The vehicle was spotted near the Alberton Police Station and police officers managed to apprehend the suspect and recover the vehicle.”

According to Thomas, the car was returned to the victim on 24 June by Alberton police when Paul Farrow, also from IRS, accompanied the victim to the Alberton Police Station to collect the vehicle.

“We undertook this case and liaised with police on a pro bono basis,” added Thomas.

Constable Thabo Malatji of Yeoville police said, “It is good that the vehicle was returned to the lawful owner. I urge all members of the public to take caution so as to not have a similar incident happen to them.”
